James Top Season Continues

Cambridge trainer Roger James has enjoying an outstanding season on both the home front and across the Tasman. He equalled his best-ever tally of New Zealand winners at Matamata today when the progressive Firepower strode to victory.

That represented James’ 46th winner for the current term while in Australia he has collected multiple Group One wins with the stable star Silent Achiever. “We’ve had a good season in New Zealand and Silent Achiever is coming to hand really well again,” he said.

The free-going Firepower has gone from strength to strength and has now won three on the spin with the promise of more to come. “It was a nice effort again and it’s hard to win three in a row,” James said. “He’s a horse we’ve had to be patient with and we’re getting the rewards now. “His runs have been spaced well and if he races every three weeks or a month we’ll get another couple of runs out of him.”

Firepower, a son of Duelled, was ridden by Matt Cameron, who had been aboard in his previous Pukekohe and Rotorua wins.

“He’s definitely got better and better,” he said. “He’ll be a nice cups’ horse later on and he likes to jump and do his own thing.”

Firepower made all the running at Matamata and was too strong in the run home for Fair Fleet.
